"Backyard Discovery"
Artist: Donald Zolan
Genre: All Genres
Size of Original: 30" by 30"
This work shows a little girl named Candace crawling after a turtle that has stopped and hidden inside its shell. She saw the turtle crawling a moment ago. Now its legs and head have disappeared. She is mystified. Zolan knows little girls may be made of sugar and spice, and now he adds another ingredient: curiosity. Even though Candace is wearing a pretty, clean dress, she gets right down on the ground to investigate the turtle. The turtle is something new and different. It doesn't run and bark like a puppy, doesn't climb on a couch like a kitten and doesn't live in a cage like a canary. Zolan says, "In this piece of art I wanted to show how curious children are about this amazing planet they've been born on. Candace has just wandered outdoors and found something completely astonishing crawling out from under her porch. She's fascinated."
